Choosing a Puppy Name
My friend the Entle girl Megan recently went to see a stud dog for a weekend of romance, and now we’re all keeping our paws crossed we’ll see some new Entlebucher puppies soon. She recently asked for some help in finding good puppy names for the little ones if she does turn out to be pregnant, and it just so happens that I’ve done some research into the most popular puppy names!
Well, when I say I did some research, I actually mean that my friends over at Battersea Dogs and Cat Home just sent me an email with some cool stats on puppy names – it seems like the trend for last year was a return to traditional names, just like the Office of National Statistics has reported for human babies!
How cool is that, humans who adopted a puppy in 2011 went for the popular names they heard their friends naming their human babies the year before!
So what are the names then?
Most Popular Dog Names 2011
| Ranking | Male dogs | Ranking | Female dogs |
| 1 | Charlie | 1 | Bella |
| 2 | Buster | 2 | Roxy |
| 3 | Jack | 3 | Daisy |
| 4 | Max | 4 | Poppy |
| 5 | Tyson | 5 | Molly |
| 6 | Rocky | 6 | Lily |
| 7 | Bailey | 7 | Ruby |
| 8 | Alfie | 8 | Tia |
| 9 | Bruno | 9 | Coco |
| 10 | Diesel | 10 | Lola |
And Some Unusual Names
However just as some babies are given rather unusual names, there were also some animals with eyebrow-raising monikers arriving at Battersea’s gates. Among the thousands of dogs there were several called Gucci, as well as an Armadillo, Hero Pig, Nancy Drew and a tiny Yorkshire Terrier called Megatron. Hidden among the regular cat names were felines called Batman, Miss Piggy and Big Dave, as well as a Mr Bean.
“People often see their pet as an extension of their own personality, so choosing an unusual name can be a way of making sure your dog or cat stands out. Unusual names can still suit an animal, so Big Dave was a large, confident cat who was a real character, while one of the dogs called Gucci was a Chihuahua who loved being the centre of attention.” (Lost & Found Assistant BAttersea Dog Home – Louise Taylor)
What do you reckon – did they miss any good names off the list?

Bella’s a good one isn’t it Alfie
(One week and two days to go!!!)
Bella is a really cute girl name – especially for a girl as pretty as my little sis! *waggy tail*
I’m glad mine DIDN’T make the list! When Mom named me she always loved the name “Dakota” she looked up the meaning online and found out it means “Trusted Friend” and that clinched it!
I like being unique…when I go to the vet and they say “Dakota” 50 other dogs don’t respond!!
Barks and licks and love, Dakota
Roooo dakota is a really nice and unusual name in deed! My humans had no idea how popular my name was until they called for me in the park and three other dogs turned up *waggy tail*.
Well, I don’t know if Fred and Gloria are unique or not, but their special names to me!
Hi Y’all,
How y’all doin’? Just stopped by for a visit.
Please don’t tell me that someone named their baby Diesel? My Human Papa has a diesel truck. Can’t imagine what it would look like if it were a person.
Hope y’all are havin’ a great week!
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
rooo Diesel is a cool doggie name, but I can’t even imagine a little human baby named Diesel – unless he is born looking like the actor Vin Diesel *waggy tail*

I’m glad Nola’s not up there! Even if people always hear it as Lola and I’ve only met one person who knew what it means (New Orleans LouisianA)
Nola
You have a real cool name Nola! *waggy tail*
We named Bella back in 2002 before the stupid Twilight thing… now everyone has that name!
It’s still a very pretty name *waggy tail*
