Monday Mischief – The Dreaded Cone of Shame

by Alfie Entlebucher on January 30, 2012

Hello? Hello? I hope you can hear me Okay, I’m speaking from inside a cone and there’s a big echo in here! O’boy do I have stories to tell you this week. It all started on Wednesday.

I decided that I wanted to get a closer look at what my human was typing on the computer so I jumped up and placed my paws on her desk. Okay, so they might have landed on the keyboard and upset her a little – but thats not important. She pushed me off the desk. Did you hear that? She pushed me off the desk! Dog abuse I hear you shout and you wouldn’t be wrong.

Not Part of the Plan…

My paws slid off the desk and I resigned myself to going back to my bed when one of my dew claws caught the edge of the desk itself, buried itself into the soft wood and refused to move any further. I was brave and didn’t even howl at that point, but then my leg started to swell up around the claw and it hurt so much I had to go to the Vets the next day. Oh how I howled when she examined me.

Anti inflammatory Meds & Cuddles

The vet gave me anti inflammatory meds and told me to come back on the Friday to get my paw properly checked out when the swelling was gone. On the Friday she noticed a hairline fracture in my dew claw, all the way up to the quick and she said I needed to be sedated to have it cut really, really short.

I looked up at my humans fully expecting their sympathy at that point. I was in pain, and had to have an operation – surely that should be worth at least a treat or a cuddle? I did get a cuddle but then they started asking the vet lots of questions and I pricked my ears.

‘Could we have him neutered at the same time?’

What? Neutered? Noooo, that was never part of my plan!

‘My paw is fine now, really it is! Look I can bounce around no problem!’ I tried to convince them I didn’t need an operation, but at that point it was too late and they took me in for surgery.

I woke up later feeling very wobbly and my head was stuck inside a the silly cone of shame you can see in the pictures, and my paw was wrapped up in what can only be described like a boxing glove. Oh how the best laid plans can go wrong. I’m feeling much better now, but the cone is horrible & I’m itching to start licking!

So the question is – who’s been up to the most mischief this week, me or the humans? *waggy tail*

Oh, no, your poor paw! Hopefully your cone of shame duration is short, and you get lots of treats!

Elka’s dewclaws were removed, I’m told, the day her tail was docked, theoretically to prevent these kinds of injuries in the “working breed” that is the Doberman. While I don’t know if I think EVERY dog should have his or her dewclaws removed at 3 days (ish), I do know that’s one injury I don’t have to worry about, anyway.

A lot of Entlebuchers have their dew claws removed when they’re tiny little pups too – and I used to think it was cruel and unnecessary but almost all my siblings have had problems with theirs so there seem to be good reasons to have them removed on some breeds at least..

Alfie, I’m hurting for you. I hope you’re back to normal again soon and you can get that cone of shame off so you can start licking again.

Oh Alfie that really isn’t good. Take a tip from the girls here. If you run at things fast enough while wearing a cone you can break them. You can also take a chunk out of the plaster. Thankfully I’ve never had to wear one. Take care my dearest friend and get well soon.

I’ve already managed to get it off twice but the problem is that I can never quite remember how I did it *waggy tail*

I didn’t know you could actually break stuff with it though, that’s so cool!

That’s my plan! I tried to kiss my human on the mouth this morning – she wasn’t too happy to have HER face in the cone, but still she expects ME to be in it? Life’s not fair!

Where do I start Alfie?

You poor thing – a sore paw, a surgery you weren’t expecting AND as if that wasn’t enough – the CONE of SHAME!! And all because you wanted to help your Mum on the computer……

I feel your pain about the Cone as I had one for about a year – OK, it was only a couple of weeks but it felt like a year – I so hated it!!

I think your Mischief was minor in comparison to what your humans got up to – they’re getting to good – you need to keep an eye on them!! :)

I’m sending you huge wags buddy,

Your pal Snoopy :)

Poor Alfie! I hope you are feeling better soon. You can use the cone to scoop stuff up, it can be pretty fun, I hear.

The most fun I’ve had with the cone is to wake my human up with a slobbery kiss in a cone tent! *waggy tail*

Awww, I know about the cone of shame from my sister, Nala — she’s had to wear it a couple of times. So sorry to hear about your paw. Hope you’re better soon! :)

Woofs & hugs, <3
