Welcome back to Friday Foto Fun – I hope you’ve had lots of fun snapping photos since last week! This week I’ve sniffed out three great books about dog photography. One of them will get you all inspired about dog photography whether you’re a photographer or not! The other two books will give you plenty of ideas for how to take better photos of your own dog. Enjoy!
Dogs – Gods By Tim Flach
You know the saying “Never work with children or animals” – I’m so happy Tim Flach completely ignored it and went about shooting these photos. Whether you’re a dog lover or not, you’ll have to agree every photograph in Tim’ Flach’s book Dogs – Gods looks amazing. Whether working with big slobbery beasts or smaller versions of man’s best friend, Tim manages to capture the true character of every dog’s personality, whilst turning it into a real work of art! This is a must buy for any dog lover – and budding dog photographer could grab bucket loads of inspiration from Tim!
Dog Photography for Dummies – Kim Rodgers & Sarah Sypniewski
This book might not look as stunning as the Dogs Gods book, but never judge a book by its cover! (Personally, I always prefer to chew a book before I know if its any good!) This yellow little number is packed with dog photo tips for enthusiastic dog photographers and dog lovers alike. All dogs have their own adorable habits and If you’ve ever thought “I wish I had a photo of that”, then Dog Photography for Dummies might be for you. Kim and Sarah have put together a hands on guide with lots of tips and advice on how to capture even the most camera shy of mutts on film.
They will walk you through everything from what camera equipment you need, to basic dog psychology and how to achieve similar results to those super cute photos that are featured throughout the book. They let you know the best times and places to take photos of you pooch, how to take good looking close ups and share some tips on how to take photos of dogs with their human pals. I couldn’t find anything in it about how to slobber proof the lens, but I’m sure you can work that out! *waggy tail*
Pet Photography Now!: A Fresh Approach to Photographing Animal Companions
I never thought I’d say this in my blog, but some people photograph other animals than dogs, would you believe it? Some even claim that *cats* could be worthy of putting in front of a camera lens. Or *rabbits* even! I thought they were just for chasing! *waggy tail* I’m not entirely convinced, but just in case there are some dual pet owners out there who needs tips on how to photograph other pets than their dogs I thought his book could come in useful.
Like many other pet photography books, Pet Photography Now! gives plenty of advice on cameras, equipment and lighting. Then they go into much detail on how to photograph a range of pets, from dogs and puppies, to rabbits, kittens, horses and birds. The book contains lots of creative photos that both explain the techniques involved as well as give you plenty of inspiration.
I hope you found these dog photo book tips useful, they’re all available from my dog shop.
Keep snapping! *waggy tail*

Good recs. I actually have the first and the last book you mention. I just got the DOGS book for Christmas – definitely one of my favorite-ist gifts.
I’ve never really been a fan of the “Dummies” series but, given how I feel like I’m reading a tech manual with most photography books, I may just have to give this one a try. Thanks for the recommendation.
The Dogs – Gods book is just pawsome, I loved every page of it!
)
The Dummies book is good as it starts from the beginning, not assuming that you know anything about photography
Sound like great books to pick up! Thanks for the post.
Hey Alfie,
My Mum saw that DOG book in a store here in California last week – the picture on the front cover is so totally pawsome!! I wonder if Mum can capture one of me doing a big fluffy shake?
Have a fun weekend Dude,
Your pal Snoopy
You’d look just as awesome as the dog on the cover buddy! *waggy tail*
I have seen that first book – I LOVE the photos in it! The other two look great too!
Jen needs to learn how to take photos…. more to the point, how to seize the moment instead of hoping we’ll be still.
Oooh thanks for the book suggestions, Mum might even want one!
She needs a decent camera first though, shes been saving for ages- although she still doesn’t know which one to get!
