My little sister Bella emailed me earlier this week asking if I could teach her how to swim. She said the water by the sea looked a little scary and she needed some big brother advice. No problem, I said. come on over and I’ll take you to my favourite lake. I’ll show you how to swim and play fetch in the water – it will be fun!
Said and done – she brought her humans over to our place on Sunday and we went to the lake.
Look, swimming is really easy, I said. All you need to do if follow the toy out into the water and keep moving your paws the whole time. Before you know it, you're swimming!
And what was I doing in the meantime? I was busy playing with my toy in the water of course! *waggy tail*
So as you can tell, I didn’t manage to teach Bella how to swim, she’s such a little scaredy pup! When I told her stories about how I learned to swim by falling into the deep end, she just shuddered and looked really scared.
I thought my adventure as a pup was pawsome, and that it might challenge her to go into the lake – but it just seemed to make her even more worried. She did trust me enough to walk into the water though, but she refused to get her belly wet. It must be a girl thing! I think I might need some advice – how can we teach little Bella how to swim next time she comes to visit?

I love your photo up on the rock – seems like us dogs love to be on top of a rock if possible, even in the water – jealous of all the fun you had! Emma
I bet Bella is taking mental notes as she watches you swim, pretty soon she’ll be right by your side swimming like a pro!
Oh Alfie it’s not a girl thing. Toby won’t swim either. It is hard to watch your pal miss out on the fun. Please don’t push Bella in the deep end. She doesn’t sound quite as adventurous as you!
rest assured when the time is right I am CERTAIN that little Bella will learn to swim!! How adorable is she? Especially the photo on the rock lol
Haven’t a clue – but I love the shot of Bella running and water streaming off her! Perhaps she needs floaties.
You got some great shots there! Uh oh … it does look like I’m a scaredy pup! I’ll have to work a lot harder next time won’t I … I do prefer grass and rugs to play on though. I can’t believe you swim that far out Alfie … is your dad a seal or something?
Hey Alfie! I think your doing an awesome job teaching Bella to swim. I’m sure that scaredy-pup will get the hang of it the more she watches you and sees how much fun you have!
Love the shot of Bella making it back to dry land. Unfortunately, I don’t have very good advice on how to get Bella to swim. Especially considering my Labrador Retriever (I thought they were supposed to be natural water dogs), Stetson does not like the water.
Hey Alfie,
I’m guessing she didn’t want to get her hair wet as you didn’t bring a hair dryer for her?! Tee Hee
Love the picture of her on the rock being a little chicken – says me who’s never swam and I’m 2!!
I hope you’re having a fun day,
Your pal Snoopy
Maybe she just needs a little more practice! Cali gets nervous if her feet leave the ground! You did a great job!!
Fun! I especially love the jumping shot.
You’ve got the right idea, Alfie. Just keep showing her and practice, practice, practice.
Or just be like me, who’s half duck
