Monday Mischief: If you need some help digging, I’m the right dog for the job

by Alfie Entlebucher on July 2, 2012

The humans and I went out to the country side to see our friends in Godalming this weekend. I was looking forward to a long weekend of walkies, endless games of fetch and general pampering, but it turned ut our friends had made other plans. Apparently they needed some help with the garden.

I wagged my tail cautiously at the prospect of spending a whole day in their big garden, but then all the humans walked outside  and closed the door behind them! Roooo –  I could hear them having fun out there, and I was not happy about being left out. I’ll have to admit I acted a little puppy like as I whined and whimpered by the door, but what is a poor dog to do when the whole pack is outside and you’re left all on your on own? They said something about using sharp tools, like saws and stuff, and apparently they don’t mix well with waggy tails.

Sulking

Whatever, I have my own toys, I thought and went for a snooze until they came back inside.

Then the second day they were all so exhausted, they actually asked for my help. They needed my expertise on a little problem they had.

My help?

As if I’d forgotten all about being abandoned the day before. I don’t think so!

Hold on, did someone mention the word digging? Digging, as in pawing through mucky mud?

Rooooo! I’m in! *waggy tail*

Turns out the humans had been working on cutting down a big bush the previous day, and now they were digging around the roots, trying to get them out of the ground.

Surveying the work at paw

I surveyed the area, and inspected their progress. They had done quite a good job so far, but they needed someone to get down underneath the roots, someone who’s not afraid of getting his paws dirty, someone who doesn’t mind creepy crawlers or a wiggly worm or two, someone like me!

Still surveying, just taking a little snack break

I took matters into my own paws and started digging immediately! Boy did that cool soil feel good against my paws and nose. I could so start my own gardening business I thought as we found the last root and pulled the whole thing out of the ground.

Getting my paws dirty

Coming up for a little air

The humans helped me carry the roots

Then the beers came out, and the humans started celebrating that the job was done. I looked up, and waited patiently for a bubbly drink of my own when instead I was taken to the back of the garden.

Hey – where’s my beer?

Why am I the only one being hosed down?

Don't forget that paw!

As you can probably tell, I’m calling mischief on the humans this week! *Waggy tail*

What were your humans thinking? Us dogs are supposed to be the mischief makers.
