12 year old Tom Stannage from Oakham, Leicestershire, will be awarded the prestigious John MacDougall Quaich at the world’s greatest dog show, Crufts this week.
Tom has been recognised for his contribution at the Young Kennel Club (YKC) National Training Camp which took place in July 2011. Tom won a place at the camp by entering a competition in the local paper, and impressed the camp’s trainers with his determined spirit. Tom was chosen as the member who most impressed the trainers with the effort and attention he applied to every activity he took part in with his dog, Rolo, a crossbreed.
Each trainer at the 2011 YKC National Training Camp was asked to nominate two members who had tried the hardest and improved the most in their chosen discipline(s). The trainers were extremely impressed with Tom’s attitude towards working and playing with Rolo, and he was the clear winner as he excelled in all activities at the camp. He did not have much previous experience in dog training before attending camp for the first time, which makes his performance even more impressive.
Delighted with the award, Tom said: “I was very happy when I heard Rolo and I had won the award and happy we had been recognised for something we both enjoy doing. I am very nervous about going to Crufts but quite excited too.”
The John MacDougall Quaich
The John MacDougall Quaich has a long history within the Young Kennel Club. It originally recognised multi talented dogs and was presented to the triathlon winner at Crufts, but later it was decided that the award should be presented to a YKC member who had shown dedication, put in lots of effort and was seen to improve the most over a range of disciplines at National Training Camp.
The trophy was acquired in 1997 and is a sterling silver quaich on a wooden plinth with a sterling silver band made in 1993. It was donated by Mr John Spurling to the Kennel Club Junior Organisation, as the YKC was known at the time, in memory of the late John MacDougall, Chairman of the Kennel Club.
Tom will be presented the John MacDougall Quaich by YKC Vice Chairman, Pat Dufty on Thursday March 8th at 15.50 on the YKC Stand at Crufts.
