Why did they not tell me (about the birds and the bees)?

by Alfie Entlebucher on October 25, 2011

I have an official complaint to make. Why didn’t anyone tell me about that birds and the bees before? Now I keep getting into all these embarrassing situations.

A couple of days ago I was playing fetch in the park and having so much fun I didn’t even have time to look at the other dogs around me. When the human stopped throwing the ball I noticed there was a cute looking Staffie girl circling around me. I could have sworn she winked, and she desperately tried to invite me for a game of chase. I was so into my game though, that I only had eyes for the tennis ball.

‘Sorry he is a bit boring he just wants to play with the ball,’ my human said to the Staffie’s human.

‘That’s alright, he probably knows she’s only after his danglies anyway,’ she replied.

‘Sorry?’ My human wasn’t sure she could trust her ears.

‘The only time she wants to play with dogs is if they’re intact. Otherwise she just ignores them.’ They moved on and I was left with a lot of questions.

Then, yesterday I took my humans for a lovely stroll along the river. The weather was great and lots of humans were out walking with their kids and dogs. I was sniffing around and making news friends like I always do when suddenly one of the girls I was chatting with turned around bit me really hard across my neck. I squeaked like I got my tail stuck in a door and the humans hurried to check me over. The dog’s human turned up.

‘Sorry she’s on heat, and I didn’t think he had noticed.’ My humans looked dumbstruck.

I felt completely clueless and did not know what was going on or what I was supposed to have noticed. All I did was sniff and then all of a sudden I had sharp teeth around my neck. Honestly, I heard or saw nothing that could explain why she grabbed me like that.

We walked on and my humans said something about not wanting a basket of puppies on our door step, and maybe it was time they called the vet. Totally random. Could someone please explain what is going on?

Uh oh, Alfie. I don’t think you’re going to like where this is headed. :o But it’s the best thing if you’re not going to be bred deliberately then we don’t want any extra little Alfie’s running around in need of homes.

FTR, what the heck were that girl dog’s parents thinking having her out unattended like that? Yikes!

My humans were not impressed with the other dog’s owners. Who lets a dog on heat run around loose where there’s other dogs, unless they secretly wish for puppies? :o )

Gee, Alfie. I hope your owner has thought about the pros and the cons of desexing. I’ve been meaning to write a blog post about it, but in the meantime, you owner may be interested in reading this: http://companionanimalwelfaresociety.org.au/forum/read.php?8,13

I think they’ve done quite a lot of research into it, including waiting until I’m old enough. Thanks for the link!

Thanks for popping by! Yeah puppies are good, but there are just too many to go around.

Well Alfie, if you were in Washington you would have to have your “danglies” removed if you wanted to play at one of our wonderful off-leash dog parks. Some humans ignore the rules but it causes dog fights because other dogs either get really offended (maybe they are jealous because they don’t have danglies) or obsessed with dogs with danglies. Anyway, it sound like you don’t like the misunderstandings you are encountering so a vet may be able to help you.

Its not easy being a dog sometimes, and it must be even more difficult in Washington with extra rules in the dog parks :-)

You’re not supposed to neuter bigger breeds until they are at least 12 months old so if I lived in Washington I think I would have driven my humans mad if I was never allowed to run off lead *must run*. Here in London we don’t have the same restrictions, which is lucky for me.

I always tell them other dogs that I am neutered and it’s great because then I love everybody! I wish more animals were neutered.

I always make lots of friends wherever I go, but sometimes other dogs get a little angry with me (or over curious). Having heard the humans talking to the vet though, I think my days as the ladies favourite are numbered :-)
