Join the Train Your Dog Month Challenge
Hi its Linda here behind the keyboard today. Alfie has granted me permission to talk about one of his favourite subjects – dog training. If Alfie had stayed behind the keyboard he would have probably labelled January ‘train your human’ month and made it into a month of mischief – and I’m not sure I’m up for that after looking through his report of 2013’s mischief!
January is Train Your Dog Month and its the first time Alfie and I join the challenge this year. If you follow our blog you probably know that our Alfie is a super clever Entlebucher Mountain Dog with more energy than a small nuclear plant so I’m always on the look out for activities where he can burn off some of that bounce and brain power while we have fun and spend time together.
We’ve signed up for a new round of agility classes starting next week and I know Alfie will be so happy and excited to see the equipment again. He loves agility so much and he is completely fearless, there is quite literally nothing that fazes him as he races round the circuit.
There’s only one tiny little problem – he loves running round the circuit so much that he doesn’t always take the time to actually think and look where he puts his paws, and I’m worried that he might hurt himself falling off the equipment.
Tricks for Agility Dogs
Before Christmas we went to a special workshop for agility doggies over at at Ace Dog Sports where we learned the basis for a couple of fun tricks that we can do to increase Alfie’s body awareness and help him build his core strength so he is all prepared for his agility classes – all while also improving our ‘team work’ and making training safer.
So our challenge for Train Your Dog Month will be to learn some pawsome tricks like ‘sit pretty’, turning around on a platform and ‘backing up’. Alfie loves learning new tricks and I know we’ll have lots of fun together and continue building our bond – and that’s the whole point of train your dog month. After all – training is something you do with your dog – not to them, so go on and hop over to these guys for a puppy training program.
Join the Challenge & Bloghop
Alfie and I are co-hosting a bloghop with Pamela over at Something Wagging This Way Comes and Kristin and Shiva over at Rescued Insanity, so all you need to do is figure out what you want to do and link up with us at the end of the month so we can see what you and your dog did to build your relationship through training this month!
There’s more! From the linky list, we’ll pick one training team at random to win a $25 donation to their favorite pet charity and a prize pack for you and your dog.
And the most important thing to remember: do not stress out. The goal is not to teach a perfect trick. The goal is to use training time to build the bond with your dog. So whether you’re teaching your dog to roll over, sit pretty or sniff for edible mushrooms in the woods – make sure you have fun together!
What will your January training challenge be?
